The Woodcut Process: Color, Part 1
I create color in my woodcuts through the use of multiple blocks, one color printed on top of another. In Jerusalem – View of the Old City in Sunlight, I began with a sketch made on the site in Jerusalem. From that, I carved multiple blocks which I printed in succession, each superimposed (or "registered") precisely over the previous color.

The watercolor and pencil sketch of Jerusalem was drawn on the site.

The first block establishes the color of the buildings in sunlight.

I mixed the inks to try to convey the luminous beauty of the creamy limestone, called Jerusalem stone, that is mandated for all construction within the city.

The second block, registered precisely on top of the first, creates
the shadows.
