The Sculpting Process: Working in Clay, Part 1
Clay is malleable and easily worked, so long as it is kept moist. (Between working sessions I wrap the sculpture in damp rags and then cover it with plastic bags.) But the sheer weight of the clay presents a challenge, and any unsupported portion of a sculpture will tend to sag under its own weight. For this reason, sitting and reclining figures are easier to sculpt in clay than standing figures.

Working with stiff clay, I begin to sketch out the figure’s
torso and limbs. As I progress
further I will begin to use clay that is moister and more easily worked.

Here I begin to establish the basic gesture. Much of the early work is done with my hands alone.
