Jews, Christians, and Muslims all revere Abraham as founding patriarch. (Jews and Christians trace their ancestry to Abraham’s son Isaac, Muslims to his son Ishmael.) The golden-domed mosque called the Dome of the Rock literally encloses the rocky outcropping on which Abraham is said to have bound his son Isaac. Muslim legend counters with the belief that Abraham bound Ishmael, not Isaac, and that the place was Mecca. Muslims honor the rock as the site from which Mohammed is said to have risen to heaven.
