The Totentanz, or Dance of Death, has its origins in 14th century western Europe. The Totentanz reminded viewers that death comes to everyone, rich or poor, highborn or low.
In the hands of some artists, most notably Hans Holbein the Younger in the 16th century, the Totentanz also served as potent and sometimes poignant social, political, or religious commentary. Margaret Adams Parker's Darfur woodcuts follow this long visual tradition.
